BIOGRAPHY
Oscar Wilde, in full Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde, (born October 16, 1854, Dublin, Ireland—died November 30, 1900, Paris, France), Irish wit, poet, and dramatist whose reputation rests on his only novel, He was a spokesman for the late 19th-century Aesthetic movement in England, which advocated art for art’s sake, and he was the object of celebrated civil and criminal suits involving homosexuality and ending in his imprisonment (1895–97).

LITERARY WORKS
The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), one of his comic masterpieces Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).

BACKGROUND
In 1800, the Union Act was signed, which meant the political alliance of Great Britain and the island of Ireland, thus creating the United Kingdom. The Irish parliament was abolished and 100 seats were granted in the Westminster Parliament to represent. However, despite the fact that the majority of the Irish population was Catholic, until 1829 the law prevented any Catholic from holding any seats. In addition, until the end of the 19th century, the prohibition that prevented any Catholic from studying in British universities remained.
